Researchers Developed Li-Ion Battery With Inbuilt Fire Extinguisher

As we all know, Lithium-ion-batteries offer numerous benefits which simply makes them perfect for use in the electronics that we use every day. However, it comes with significant downsides is that they catch fire very quickly.

Previously we had shared an article in which we have discussed the possible reason why lithium-ion-batteries explode. We have just seen the official recall of the Galaxy Note 7 due to battery problems which are making the phones to blow.

However, thanks to the research team at Stanford University, the researchers have designed and tested a lithium-ion battery with a built-in fire extinguishing chemical that stops any fire from breaking out.

As explained by 9To5Google “The Stanford team has built their lithium-ion battery which includes a capsule of triphenyl phosphate (TPP) residing within the battery’s electrolyte fluid. If the battery’s internal temperature reaches 150 °C (302 °F), the capsule will melt and release the TPP chemical.”

“TPP is a type of chemical fire retardant that — as tested by the team — is capable of extinguishing a battery fire in 0.4 seconds.”

The researchers at Standford University are trying to pack in TPP inside a lithium-ion battery for some time now, every time it resulted in hampered battery performance. This is the first time researchers have managed to accomplish the task.

Hopefully, this type of technology will help prevent accidents in the future because we already use them in our daily gadgets like laptop, smartphone or power bank. You can find out more about this “fire extinguisher” battery tech in a journal published by Science Advances
