Samsung Introduces The World’s First UFS Memory Cards To Kill MicroSD Cards

The Korean technology giant Samsung on thursday announced its first UFS memory cards (Universal Flash Storage), which have the dimensions similar to the microSD cards. But, they are 5 times faster, absurdly with read rates of up to 530 MB/s.

For comparison purposes, the microSD cards with the UHS-1 standard can normally reach the speed of only 95 MB/s. But, the biggest advantage of the UFS may be the amount of input and output operations per second (IOPS): While the UFS reaches up to 40,000 IOPS in random read, whereas a good microSD card usually reaches not more than 1,800 IOPS.

As the idea of the Korean technology giant Samsung, behind its UFS Memory Cards is, now users can easily use this UFS memory cards in high-end cameras to photograph high-quality pictures and to film or record 360-degree videos in high-resolution, such as virtual reality 3D cameras, drones, and DSLRs. With the 170 MB/s of constant write speed, a video in Full HD (like the size of 5 GB) would take only 30 seconds to be recorded on the memory card.

The senior Vice President of Memory Product Planning & Application Engineering at Samsung, Jung-bae Lee said that “Our new 256GB UFS card will provide an ideal user experience for digitally-minded consumers and lead the industry in establishing the most competitive memory card solution”. However, the UFS memory cards will allow both reading and writing of data simultaneously, which doubles the bandwidth capacity.

The designs of the cards have been patented by Korean technology giant Samsung, but will be licensed to allow other manufacturers to develop the compatible products without paying royalties. Of course, currently there is no smartphone is for sale which supports the new standard UFS Memory Cards, but, it would be no surprise if a UFS slot came to a future Galaxy Note 7 or Galaxy S8. Moreover, the new Samsung UFS memory cards will be available in capacities of 32, 64, 128 and 256 GB. But, prices were still not disclosed. Obviously, yes, you can not expect any discount.
