Samsung May Launch a Foldable Smartphone in 2017

If rumors are to be believed, Samsung will be shipping a foldable smartphone in 2017.

The report from ETNews cites that the South Korean giant, Samsung has been working on a technology to develop smartphones with foldable displays since the past three years. The report quotes that it could change into a 5 inch smartphone when folded or can become 7 inch tablet when opened. The company has joined hands with some local and foreign firms for the technologies needed to make a innovative foldable smartphone.

The foldable smartphone is believed to sport OLED display that could be folded in two halves just like a wallet, which makes the smartphone/tablet to be easily carried in a pocket. Samsung’s parent firm called Samsung Display is in charge of developing a foldable display.

Samsung Display director Lee Chang-hoon said, “The development of foldable OLED is taking place according to our plan. We are planning on mass-production and release of this product by discussing with our partners” said Samsung Display director Lee Chang-hoon.

Earlier, Samsung filed patent application for different technologies that gives hint about the possibility of foldable smartphone from Samsung. According to experts, the foldable smartphones could propel a lustre in the fading smartphone market.

Recently, experts warned that iPhone sales will worsen if the company doesn’t unveil new innovative technologies in its upcoming phones. It seems that major tech giants are aiming to introduce innovative technologies in the smartphones.
