Microsoft Replaces Command Prompt with PowerShell in Latest Windows 10 Build

We all know that Command Prompt has been around for as long as we can remember. However, Microsoft is trying to replace the super-popular Command prompt in some essential parts of the operating system.

Microsoft had introduced a new Windows 10 Insider Build 14971. The latest build brings many new features which include the ability to read EPUB books in the Microsoft Edge browser itself, new Paint 3D app.

However, the biggest change that comes with Windows 10 Insider Build 14971 is making PowerShell the default shell in Windows 10. PowerShell is the new and more powerful shell in Windows Operating system. Microsoft aims to bring “the best command line experiences to the forefront for all power users”

As Microsoft stated in their official blogs “PowerShell is now the defacto command shell from File Explorer. It replaces Command Prompt (aka, “cmd.exe”) in the WIN + X menu, in File Explorer’s File menu, and in the context menu that appears when you shift-right-click the whitespace in File Explorer.”

Users who don’t want to accept this change and ditch command prompt can opt out of the Win+X change. For this, go to Settings> Personalization> Taskbar. Now you need to turn off the option “Replace Command Prompt with Windows PowerShell in the menu when I right-click the Start button or press Windows key+X”.

Right now users are having the choice to select between Command prompt and Powershell. However, the future of Command prompt remains unclear. Moreover, Microsoft is celebrating PowerShell’s 10th birthday this week. So, replacing CMD with more powerful shell shouldn’t shock users.
