Did you know that the computers have created their own secret language and are probably talking about us right now? Well, that’s kind of an oversimplification, and the last part is just plain untrue. However, Google AI just developed its own secret language which is really amazing.

In September, the tech giant Google officially introduced the Google Neural Machine Translation (GNMT) system which used deep learning to produce better translations between different languages. Initially, this system allowed translations between Chinese and English, gradually expanding to more than 103 languages Google Translate currently supports.

In the process of expansion, the Google Neural Machine Translation (GNMT) system uses a system known as Zero-Shot Translation, which facilitates the process of expansion into more than 100 languages supported by Google Translate.

With this new method, the Google Neural Machine Translation (GNMT) system can easily translate between two different languages without first establishing a direct connection between the two. Thus, if the system is able to translate between Castilian and English between English and Korean, you will also be able to translate between Castilian and Korean without having to “teach” how.

But the really special feature of this new system is that Google does not use Google Neural Machine Translation (GNMT) system English as a “bridge” to translate between Castilian and Korean. Instead, neural networks system are able to make connections between concepts and words that are not related by their programmers.

The newer multilingual system has learned the basic GNMT system. As it also adds an artificial token at the beginning of an input sentence which simply specifies the target language.

If you observe the above 3D map of the translated data presented, then you can see that the system specifies the same color to the sentence with the same meaning for different language set. For example, “a sentence translated from English to Korean with the same meaning as a sentence translated from Japanese to English share the same color”.

The Google system, therefore, produces a language used internally to represent different concepts and then use it as a link between the different languages. A breakthrough in artificial intelligence that surprised even those responsible for Google.
