We all know very well that how the tech giant Microsoft forced Windows 7 and 8 users to upgrade to the new version of Windows known as Windows 10 ? Much has been written and discussed regarding the issue and Microsoft has always tried to justify. Now, it seems that Apple is also following the same path as Microsoft does.

Apple Will Force macOS Sierra Update With Automatic Downloads

Do you remember when you started to realize that Microsoft forced Windows 7 and 8 users to upgrade to the new version of Windows known as Windows 10 ? Much has been written and discussed regarding the issue and Microsoft has always tried to justify.

Until it realized that it is the option which is only available to users and only they have the rights to decide whether they want to download them or not. But the Cupertino giant Apple seems to have learned from this case, hence, it has started “pre-downloading” the latest version of its desktop operating system known as macOS 10.12 Sierra, in the background, if you are still running OS X El Capitan.

The news was released by the channel “The Register” which reveals that Apple is following its own rival Microsoft’s steps and automatically started “pre-downloading” the MacOS Sierra (the latest version of the operating system for Apple Desktop) as we told earlier.

However, it is important to note that this update is only for those who have discharged the function of active automatic updates. It should also be noted that, by this means, Apple only proceeded to the provision of security patches and updates to the operating system level in use.

Not only that, “Apple is also being smart about the download. If your computer is low on space, macOS Sierra will not download,” The Loop reports. “In addition, if it has downloaded and your computer starts to get low on space, the download will be automatically deleted.”

The automatic update consists of 4.8 GB of data that are downloaded to the Mac PC supported for updating such as:-

MacBook late 2009 and later
Late 2009 iMac and later
MacBook Air 2010 and later
MacBook Pro 2010 and later
Mac Mini 2010 and later
Mac Pro 2010 and later

It is also known that the system installation is not automatic, requiring user consent of the machine to move forward.

How to disable this option?

If you do not require the update, then many users like you may not want to have active this option. To disable, you only need to perform two simple steps.

Start by accessing System Preferences and look for the option “App Store”. Then look for the option Download new updates in the background and withdraw the option which should be selected.

However, the automatic update is still a tad irritating if you have no aim to update your Mac anytime soon.

Despite Apple has not been so hard on this level as Microsoft did (that sometimes even used some “tricks” to force the update), the truth is that it is the first time that the Cupertino company is implementing this type of function at this level.
